Taxi and ride-hailing apps in Namibia: a 2026 guide

Getting around Namibia used to mean waiting at a hike point or squeezing into a combi and hoping for a fair price. Today there are apps for city rides in Windhoek and a growing set of options for the long trips between towns. This guide covers what is available in 2026, what to check before you get in, and how to book even without data.

City rides in Windhoek and the coast

Most ride-hailing in Namibia happens in Windhoek, with some service in Swakopmund and Walvis Bay. International apps such as Yango and inDrive and the Namibian app LEFA all operate in the capital, each with its own way of setting prices: some show a fixed price upfront, others let the passenger and driver agree a price. Whichever you use, check the driver and car match what the app shows before you get in.

Inter-town travel: Windhoek to the north and back

Long-distance trips are where most Namibians actually spend on transport: Oshakati, Ondangwa, Eenhana, Rundu and Katima Mulilo to Windhoek and back, usually on the B1. City apps generally do not book these trips.

VanTele Mobility lets you reserve a seat on a scheduled inter-town trip on 142 routes between 54 towns. Every route has its own page with the distance, travel time and seat prices, for example Windhoek to Oshakati.

Inter-town fares in Namibia are set out in the official Regional Road Public Passenger Fare Structure from the Ministry of Works and Transport. For 2026/27, Windhoek to Oshakati is N$403. On VanTele every route shows that official fare, drivers set their seat price no more than N$10 above it, and you see the exact price before you book, so a first trip on an unfamiliar route is never a guess.

No data, no smartphone? Book by SMS

Not everyone has data or a smartphone. On VanTele Mobility you can SMS the word TAXI to 081 437 7122 and a driver calls you back to arrange the ride. Every booking is confirmed by SMS, so you always have a written record.

Sending a parcel between towns

Parcels travel with verified drivers on the same routes, from N$30, with a VTM tracking code. The recipient gets a secret code, and the driver only hands over the parcel when that code is given. Send a parcel or track one.

Five checks before you get in any car

  • The price is agreed before the trip. On inter-town routes, compare it with the official fare for the route.
  • The driver is verified. On VanTele, every driver's licence, ID and road transportation permit is checked before their first passenger, and you can verify a driver ID card by its QR code.
  • Someone knows where you are. Share your live trip link with family. On VanTele night rides, your emergency contact gets the link automatically.
  • There is a record. Keep the SMS or in-app confirmation.
  • The car matches. Plate and driver photo should match the booking.
